Canoples Investigatons Versus Spacers Rule by KC Sprayberry

They're baaaack... :) Woot out to my friend and fellow author, KC Sprayberry! Her latest Canoples Investigations novel just released today!

If you know any teenage boys (although I think girls love 'em too...) that are looking for a great, fun read - tell them to check this out. I mean, we're talking more than just your typical teen story of boyfriend vs. girlfriend in clique-land. There are SPACE PIRATES. Re-kats and Space Gangs.

If the sci-fi angle has you worried it's going to get cheesy or lame, then think again because KC Sprayberry has a great way of getting inside of her characters heads and making them come alive with all the real to life reactions you'd expect from the kid in the desk next to you.

You can read an excerpt and follow all of the latest news about Canoples Investigations at the KC's blog Out of Control Characters.

Be sure to check out book one first!

CFBA: Greetings From the Flipside by Rene Gutteridge

Song Stuck on the Brain: What Does the Fox Say... you know the part where it says "communicate with mo-o-o-orse, mo-o-o-rse..." then later I started singing Oh Victory in Jesus and Oh Happy Day. It's been a random and varied song day.

Rene Gutteridge

MY TAKE:

My book arrived in the mail on Monday, so I haven't had a chance to finish the book, but so far? Loving it. We're talking about a very talented and funny author here. The lines are sharp and the story so far has been really well formed. With pages to go, I can say this is definitely a book worth reading. Enjoy!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Hope Landon has been rewriting other people's greeting cards since she was six years old -- there's always a funnier caption. She's all set to chase those creative dreams with her musician fiance in New York City until he leaves Hope at the altar, deciding he must not really love this girl if he can't write a song for her. That may give her something to write about . . .

Hope disappears alone on what was supposed to be the couple's month long honeymoon. Upon returning she learns of her funeral -- everyone in her life concluded Hope must have killed herself after being jilted. Needing a fresh start more than ever, she heads for the Big Apple only to discover it's not that easy to rent a place when you've been declared dead.

Taking shelter at the YWCA, Hope soon lands a job at a Christian inspirational greeting card company as an assistant to Jake, a guy who shut down his organization's humor department. She has lost her faith in love; he needs to find something or someone that will make him laugh.

Is there anything in the cards for these two? Find out in the truly original Greetings from the Flipside by authors Rene Gutteridge (Boo) and Cheryl McKay (screenplay for The Ultimate Gift).

If you would like to read the first chapter of Greetings from the Flipside, go HERE.

CSFF: Martyr's Fire: Merlins Immortals by Sigmund Brouwer

Song Stuck on the Brain: Radioactive by Imagine Dragons

Today I'm touring with the CSFF blog tour:

Book 3 in the Merlin's Immortals series

by

MY TAKE:

Merlin's Immortals has been a tremendous series. Set in 14th century England Thomas finds himself the unwitting pawn between two very secret organizations. SO secret, he doesn't even know why they're so desperate to haunt his every move. Spies, secret passages, magic like miracles to confuse and control the masses. Thomas has decided he is on his own to fight this and find the truth.

One of the things I love most about this series is the intricacies of the plot. Who's really a friend? Is this character a mere peasant or a secret Immortal or Druid? I also love that although the author brings in what seems to be magical or fantasy, he also explains the science behind it. Proving that often what seemed impossible was mere slight of hand or chemistry.

The series has been exciting, fast paced and addictive. I can't wait to see more.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Will this dangerous quest lead the outcast Orphan King toward an ancient secret—or to certain destruction?
Posing as a beggar, Thomas escapes Magnus after fifteen men, who are calling themselves the Priests of the Holy Grail, arrive and take control of the castle through wondrous acts and apparent miracles. With the help of his longtime friend Gervaise, Thomas sets out on a journey that leads him to the ancient Holy Land. Unaware that Katherine and Hawkwood are watching over him, Thomas is tested in his beliefs and comes face to face with the ancient power that the Merlins and Druids have long been searching for.

Enter the world of Merlin’s Immortals, where ancient secrets and evil conspiracies take you on a breathless adventure of discovery, intrigue, and hidden knowledge.

If you haven't read book 2, Fortress of Mist, be sure to check it out HERE.

Kregel: The Reichenback Problem by Martin Allison Booth

Song Stuck on the Brain: House of the Rising Sun by The Animals

by

Martin Allison Booth

MY TAKE:

I love Sherlock Holmes. His curmudgeonly brilliance and tactlessness is somehow endearing despite every bit of reason that says it shouldn't be. I've enjoyed Sherlock and Doc Watson in just about every form presented. SO I was sure I would love the fictional tale of Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant man who most likely was more like Sherlock than he ever cared to admit. I was rather excited to start this book.

Then I actually did start the book and found myself forcing myself to turn pages and propping my eyelids open. The begining is very slow and dry, in my opinion, and it takes way too long for the mystery to truly begin. It was too slow paced and dry for my tastes, I believe I'll stick with the original Sherlock himself.

I have to give the author credit for a feeling of authenticity, the language and feel of the setting felt very much like a Sherlockian/Conan Doyle book. And the character Conan Doyle himself was interesting. How could he not be? The man did a little bit of everything! The book did have it's moments of pleasure, just not enough for me personally to balance the scales.

I will say, to each his own. Everyone's tastes vary, so if it looks intriguing to you, please don't let my opinions stop you from trying it yourself. For your info, the book description, excerpt and trailer is below.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Arthur Conan Doyle is on the run from his own fame. Taking a much needed holiday, Doyle flees to a picturesque village in Switzerland nestled beneath the imposing Reichenbach Falls. There he hopes to find anonymity, but even in this beautiful rural setting, peace eludes him when he finds himself immediately recognized by a fan who pressures him into looking into the death of a fellow visitor.

All too soon, Doyle’s somewhat unwilling gentle probing into the case begins to cause the finger of suspicion to turn towards him. But can the creator of the famous detective actually do the sleuthing himself? Although able to pen the character of Sherlock, he soon begins to learn he does not share his leading creation’s characteristics, but rather Watson’s. Can the “sidekick” see enough of the picture to solve the case for once?

Sherlock Holmes has fascinated readers ever since he first burst into fiction, over one hundred years ago. In this novel, the first in a trilogy, we meet his author and discover the difficult relationship between them.

CFBA: A Bride for Keeps by Melissa Jagears

Song Stuck on the Brain: All These Things That I've Done Lyrics - The Killers (I'm singing the refrain over and over "I got soul but I'm not a soldier....")

This week, the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance is introducing:

A Bride for Keeps
Bethany House Publishers (October 1, 2013)
by

Melissa Jagears

MY TAKE:

Everett Cline has quite the track record with mail order brides, it's no wonder he's bride shy now. But his best friends wife has other plans and she's been quite sneaky about it! She knows Julia is right for Everett, but needs to give him the chance to see that himself.

Melissa Jagears does a fantastic job with Everett and Julia's stories. They each have such a strong back story that adds so much to present events. The humor, drama, tension...Two strong souls and personalities that learn to love again despite their pasts. More importantly there's a beautiful message of faith and learning to open up to God for His healing. It was a great read that was fun and touching.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A Tender Tale of Love on the Prairie Perfect for CBA Readers!

Although Everett Cline can hardly keep up with the demands of his homestead, he won't humiliate himself by looking for a helpmate ever again--not after being jilted by three mail-order brides. When a well-meaning neighbor goes behind his back to bring yet another mail-order bride to town, he has good reason to doubt it will work, especially after getting a glimpse at the woman in question. She's the prettiest woman he's ever seen, and it's just not possible she's there to marry a simple homesteader like him.

Julia Lockwood has never been anything more than a pretty pawn for her father or a business acquisition for her former fiance. Having finally worked up the courage to leave her life in Massachusetts, she's determined to find a place where people will value her for more than her looks. Having run out of all other options, Julia resorts to a mail-order marriage in far-away Kansas.

Everett is skeptical a cultured woman like Julia could be happy in a life on the plains, while Julia, deeply wounded by a past relationship, is skittish at the idea of marriage at all. When, despite their hesitations, they agree to a marriage in name only, neither one is prepared for the feelings that soon arise to complicate their arrangement. Can two people accustomed to keeping their distance let the barricades around their hearts down long enough to fall in love?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A Word From The Author:

I am a stay at home mother on a tiny little farm with a fixer-upper house. As much as I love writing and reading about homesteaders, I am so glad I’m a homesteader during an era with modern grocery stores to take up for my slack. I am an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher by trade, and I still work occasionally in that field along with being my church’s financial secretary and writing novels.

My husband and I have been married since 2001 and have a daughter and two little boys. My husband shares my fascination with traditional living except for being more hands on. He loves blacksmithing, knife smithing, traditional archery, hunting, etc. Generally whatever a mountain man does, he does it or has or wants to attempt it. He comes in handy for research! And of course, the rest of the family gets involved. I have my own blackpowder rifle, named Calvin, that my husband made for me. And I’m pretty sure my daughter is probably one of very few her age who can instruct adults how to shoot a longbow properly. The boy digs random holes in my yard to make “cement” with dirt and water making our yard a tripping hazard. The baby does what babies do.

CFBA: Honest Heart by Kaye Dacus

Song Stuck on the Brain: Stargate Atlantis Theme Music

This week, the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance is introducing:

An Honest Heart
B&H Books (October 15, 2013)
by

Kaye Dacus

MY TAKE:

Kaye Dacus and The Great Exhibition are back with An Honest Heart, book 2 in the historical romance series. If you haven't read book 1, Follow the Heart, then what's wrong with you!? Just kidding. I do recommend it, but the series is written in a way where each book can stand alone if necessary. In fact, I found them rather unique. I realized as I picked it  up, that Caddy's story begins in the the same early time frame that the first book started. In other words, the stories overlap.

In Follow the Heart, Kate travels to England with orders to find a wealthy husband to save her broke family. It was a great story that wrapped up at the opening of the Great Exhibition hosted by Queen Victoria. Many series would find the next book picking up where the last left off in time. Here, we not only get another great romance with Caddy that also culminates at the Great Exhibition - we also get a behind the scenes look at what we didn't get to see happening in Kate's story. BONUS!

Caddy and Kate are both strong, independent women in a time period where that is not highly valued. It's nice to see the strong woman find her true love without simpering and downplaying her intelligence. Especially with some very nice looking gentlemen! (Kaye is very good at descriptions...) Old Maids are a thing of the past. These stories show that true love can be found at any age without giving up your morals or dreams.

To read more about Follow the Heart and read a fun chat with the author, click HERE.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Set during the Industrial Revolution and the Great Exhibition of 1851, An Honest Heart is a “sitting-room romance” with the feel of a Regency-era novel but the fashions and technological advances of the mid-Victorian age.

Featuring dual romance stories, the main plot involves seamstress Caddy Bainbridge and the choice she must make between two men: one from the aristocracy, the other from the working class. Award-nominated author Kaye Dacus pinpoints the theme of honesty—both men in this love triangle have deep secrets to hide, and Caddy’s choice will be based on which of them can be honest with her.

Courtship . . . cunning . . . candor. Who possesses an honest heart?

CFBA: Dark Justice by Brandilyn Collins

Song Stuck on the Brain: Diamonds by Rihanna

This week, the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance is introducing:

Dark Justice
B&H Books (October 1, 2013)
by

Brandilyn Collins

MY TAKE:

Seatbelt Suspense is a very accurate description for Brandilyn Collins' books. I'm a long time fan of her work, so reviewing her latest was a no brainer and a thrill.

I've noticed a bit of a shift in the author's story telling tone. The suspense is just as intense, but her more recent work has taken an even deeper look into the personal and family life of the characters. In Dark Justice, Hannah Shire would have had enough on her plate with saving the world, but learning to live with and handle her mother illness adds a whole new level of complication. And her mother, Carol, isn't just a sub-story or side act to entertain or distract the reader and build suspense. Carol's story is real and touching. I appreciated the way Brandilyn presented the issue. Carol is a wonderful character. I love her 'dancing'. :)

Of course the main reason for me to read a book by Mrs. Collins, is the suspense and mystery. Dark Justice is fiction, but it's not an outrageous or inconceivable concept. In fact it's based on a real life study that the author read about where the US power grids were tested for weaknesses. It was found the whole country could go dark with a little effort and about a $60 piece of software. Scary right? How would you stop it if you were given a chance? Who would you trust? Who could you trust? What would happen to our country if it couldn't be stopped?

These are all compelling questions that beg for answers. Want to know how Hannah does it? Go get a copy of Dark Justice right away - and don't plan on sleeping for a while.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

If I’d had any idea what those words would mean to me, to my mother and daughter, I’d have fled California without looking back.

While driving a rural road, Hannah Shire and her aging mother, who suffers from dementia, stop to help a man at the scene of a car accident. The man whispers mysterious words in Hannah’s ear. Soon people want to kill Hannah and her mother for what they “know.” Even law enforcement may be involved.

The two women must flee for their lives. But how does Hannah hide her confused mother? Carol just wants to listen to her pop music, wear her favorite purple hat, and go home. And if they turn to Hannah’s twenty-seven- year-old daughter, Emily, for help, will she fall into danger as well?

Pressed on all sides, Hannah must keep all three generations of women in her family alive. Only then does she learn the threat is not just to her loved ones, but the entire country . . .

If you'd like to read the first chapter of Dark Justice, HERE.

CFBA: Tickled in Pink (and more) by Debby Mayne

This week, the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance is introducing:

Pretty is as Pretty Does (bk 1)
Bless Her Heart (bk 2)
Tickled Pink (bk 3)
Abingdon Press (June 1, 2013)
by

Debby Mayne

MY TAKE:

The only thing better than getting to review a free book, is reviewing a whole series of free books! HEAVEN!

Debby Mayne has done a great job bringing the classmates of Piney Point High to life. I enjoyed how the story was told from all their POV's, giving us several unique perspectives, and yet the series still carries a strong main story line starring Priscilla. It was fun to read about the classmates crazy lives and a little eye opening to see how I could identify with each one in some way that I didn't expect.

As the one who planned most of my own class reunions, I really clicked with these stories. But I don't think that having a 10,15, or 20 year class reunion or not, will make a difference on whether you enjoy these sassy, southern tinged novels (warnin', ya'll might find yerself talkin' like them after readin' a while.) I also have a lot of family from down south and I have to say there were a couple of characters that reminded me a lot of my Granny Boo, God rest her soul!

The Christian beliefs are there, founded probably most firmly in Priscilla, but each character is in a different place in the faith walk. The message of faith is not overwhelming, more of a "we're from the south so we grew up believing, but it's more tradition then a strong personal faith." It's a backdrop in a way. Some characters do find that shifts for them. I would have appreciated a little more Christian message, but the books are sweet, clean, fun, and a good crossover series for those not sure about reading the CBA market.

To read more about Granny Boo: Granny Time, To Granny's House We Go, Back From Granny's

ABOUT THE BOOKS:

Priscilla Slater goes to her ten-year high school reunion with equal parts dread and eager anticipation. Even though she’s a successful owner of a chain of hair salons and no longer has the mousy brown hair, crooked teeth, and discount-store wardrobe, she still feels like the ugly duckling. But when she arrives at the reunion, Priscilla soon realizes that her old classmates aren’t exactly as she remembers them. With humor and a just a touch of sassiness, Priscilla finds herself facing her own truth—and she may be surprised at what she discovers.

As Priscilla Slater’s 15-year class reunion approaches, she decides to attend out of curiosity… and to flaunt her latest achievement—taking her business to a national level with the possibility of a TV show. As if getting ready for the event and putting up with the pranks of her former classmates isn’t enough, Priscilla’s hometown visit is further complicated by her parents’ separation. With the once-solid sanctuary of her home broken at the foundation, there’s only one thing Priscilla’s parents can agree on: no matter what sort of accolades their daughter receives as a hair stylist, she’s not living up to her potential. Eager to escape the painful reality of her childhood home, Priscilla bolts as soon as a call from New York brings good news: her offer to purchase one of the best salons in the country is likely to come through. But returning to New York means returning to Tim, Priscilla’s best friend and business pal who has been impatiently suggesting their relationship should be more than a friendship. Despite her recent achievements, will Priscilla learn that success doesn’t always result in popularity—or love?

Priscilla Slater shows up at her 20-year reunion as a national celebrity. Her hair salon dynasty has skyrocketed, and to top it off, she has her own line of hair products. She has become a huge success with the “Ms. Prissy Big Hair” line that lets women with the thinnest of locks get the coveted “big hair” look so popular in the South. Her classmates have finally come to terms with adulthood, but they’re handling it with the grace of a Southern woman wearing white after Labor Day. It’s just downright awkward! Asserting the maturity that her classmates have often lacked, Priscilla holds her head high. But she can’t ignore everything. When she catches her mother in the arms of her former high school principal, Priscilla can’t get out of town fast enough. Eager to get back to her more comfortable life, Priscilla runs head on into an ultimatum: Tim tells her they’re not getting any younger—as if she has to be reminded.

MY TAKE:

Eagle Point is one of my favorite places in Illinois! :) The Nurse's Secret Suitor is book 3 in the Wings of Refuge series. If you haven't had the fun of reading the first 2 in the series, don't worry, that won't keep you from enjoying the story. BUT... I have to encourage you to get the whole series because they are such great reads. The romance is sweet, the hero isn't just the main man but the many military men and women who serve their country, and faith is a lesson learned and trait encouraged.

This round Caleb Landis is quite the handsome hero, but Kate only sees him as her friends younger brother. She's always had to be the strong leader and that is starting to wear on her. Thank goodness for the masked stranger who has a listening ear, just the right words and... Oh, can't tell you anymore. I can't bear to give it away. :) Take my word for it though, you don't want to miss this one.

Be sure to check out book 1 Doctor's Devotion and book 2 Doctor to the Rescue.
